Elementary Education Student Spotlight: Jocelyn Wallace

Updated: 14 hours ago

Get to know elementary education student, Jocelyn Wallace! Jocelyn is in her senior year at BYU and we asked her some questions to get to know a little bit more about her and why she chose her path in education.

What are you studying? Tell us about yourself!

"I am studying Elementary education with a minor in TESOL K-12! I moved around growing up and graduated high school in Las Vegas, Nevada. I served a mission in Denver, Colorado. I like to play pickleball, embroider, cook, be with friends, and sing."

Why did you decide to major in elementary education?

"Ever since I was a little girl, I've wanted to be a teacher. I want to make an impact and inspire others and I feel I've been called to do so in a classroom through teaching. I decided to add the TESOL minor when I took Crystal Jewkes' multicultural education class. This class changed my perspective and made me realize there's a lot of kids who are pushed to the sidelines because of no fault of their own. It made me realize I want to and can make a difference for these students, if I know where to point them and what resources to provide."

What has been the most impactful part of your program?

"The most impactful part of this program is the hands on experiences. I loved my first practicum and meeting the students and seeing their different personalities, strengths, and talents. It's all about the kids and it's been so fun gaining experience in a real classroom and interacting with students."

What's next for you?

"I start my second practicum in the fall in the Nebo School District. Then I will student teach during winter semester and graduate in April! After that, I'm not sure what life has planned but I'm excited to see!"
