Spotlight on McKay School Alumni: Jensen Shipp

One of our favorite things to do at the McKay School is catch up with current Alumni to see where they are now. We recently chatted with Jensen Shipp, a 2020 graduate teaching 2nd grade, to hear about how her education has helped her on her path to becoming a teacher and beyond.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Jensen Shipp! I grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and am very proud to be a Chiefs football fan :) When I'm not teaching, I love to travel, spend time outside and in the mountains, run, read books, bake, and spend time with family! I got my degree in Elementary Education and graduated from BYU in 2022. Before graduating I had the opportunity to do my student teaching in Washington DC! I was part of BYU's NISTP program and absolutely loved it! I loved being able to live in and experience a new city with others who were also doing their student teaching. We were able to see so many things and visit so many places close to us! I had an amazing class and mentor teacher who taught me so much and really prepared me to come back to Utah and have my own classroom.

What are you doing now with your degree?

I am a 2nd grade teacher in Alpine School District at Deerfield Elementary. I am about to start my 3rd year teaching and think it is just the best!

What are your future plans?

I plan on continuing to teach 2nd grade for the next few years. At some point I would love to get a Master's degree as well. I am really interested in curriculum development as well as coaching and literacy. We will see where that takes me! :)

How do you feel your education from the McKay School prepared you for where you are now?

I loved my time as a BYU student and specifically in the Mckay School. I feel like the Mckay School program really helped me to be prepared to  start teaching, especially with so much time spent in schools and classrooms. Being able to experience multiple grade levels as well as see and teach in different classrooms allowed me to form an idea of what I wanted my classroom to look and feel like!
