There is a famous quote by Brad Henry that says, “A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.” Looking back over my experiences, I realize that the best teachers in my life have done exactly that. Not only for their students, but for me as a future educator!

As you read this blog, I invite you to reflect on the teachers or professors who have touched your life and inspired your love of learning.

The Teachers Who Shaped Me

Mrs. Klein

Mrs. Klein was my first-grade teacher at Hillcrest Elementary school, and I will always remember the warmth and love I felt in her classroom. Everything was pink and sparkly, making the atmosphere magical and exciting. But beyond the decorations, it was her passion for teaching that truly stood out.

She created an environment where I felt valued and excited to learn each day. More than just teaching me how to spell and do math, she instilled in me the importance of kindness and compassion. She often reminded us that we could be whatever we wanted to be.

When she asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was simple: “Mrs. Klein.” Even though she retired years ago, she still sends Christmas cards to all her former students—a testament to her lasting impact. I aspire to be like her, a teacher who inspires wonder, excitement, and confidence while helping students recognize their infinite potential.

Mrs. Bernstein

One of my greatest mentors and favorite teachers is Mrs. Bernstein, who taught me in third grade at Highland Elementary. She had a gift for making learning both exciting and meaningful. Many of the math and writing tricks she taught us are ones I still use today. More importantly, she encouraged me to recognize my potential and develop confidence in my abilities. She believed in every student and inspired us to work hard.

When I was a senior in high school, I had the incredible opportunity to intern in Mrs. Bernstein’s classroom. She taught me how to manage students, build meaningful relationships, and deliver engaging lessons. Watching her in action showed me just how rewarding teaching can be.

I loved helping her students with grammar and math, and I looked forward to being in her classroom every day. That experience greatly increased my desire to become a teacher. Even now, I apply the wisdom and advice she shared with me, and I know I will continue to do so throughout my career.

Mrs. Lambert

In high school, my favorite teacher was Mrs. Lambert. Her kindness and honesty opened my eyes to new perspectives and taught me the importance of respecting different viewpoints. She was a strong leader, dedicated to helping her students see the bigger picture.

Her class challenged me to think critically and work hard, creating a lifelong love of learning. She had the biggest impact on me of all of my teachers. She knew how to push me to reach my potential but also cared about me for who I was.

She sacrificed so much for her students and worked hard to teach us each day. Her words of advice and wisdom still affect my dedication to my schoolwork but also how I treat others. Because of Mrs. Lambert, I have learned how to connect with all kinds of people, and have empathy for others, even when I don't agree with them. I believe that every teacher should aspire to be like her.

Professor Jensen

During my first semester at BYU, I took an introduction to education class with Professor Jensen. I was already interested in becoming a teacher, but his passion for supporting students solidified my decision to stay in the elementary education major. He emphasized the importance of advocating for all students, which became one of my core motivations as a future teacher.

Professor Jensen not only helped us see our worth as educators but also made us feel like we belonged at BYU and in the teacher workforce. His advice pushed me to seek out ways to support every child in my future classroom, ensuring that each student feels seen and valued.

Dr. Cutri

Another professor who has greatly influenced me is Dr. Cutri. She brings a warmth into the room that fosters a loving and supportive environment. Her teaching focuses on understanding and addressing students’ individual needs while creating a welcoming classroom atmosphere. She equips us with strategies for handling serious issues and making our classrooms inclusive spaces.

The moment I step into her classroom, my worries fade, and I become fully immersed in learning. I aspire to create the same kind of environment for my own students—one where they feel heard, supported, and empowered to grow.

The Lasting Impact of Educators

Teachers and professors play a profound role in shaping the lives of their students. Every educator I have had has contributed to my foundation of lifelong learning and I am so grateful for them. Their sacrifices, dedication, and passion leave lasting impressions that inspire students to be better versions of themselves.

I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the teachers who have impacted your life. If one comes to mind, consider reaching out to thank them—you never know how much your words might mean to them.
