What Makes a Good Teacher?

Think back on your favorite teacher. What do you remember about them? Why did you like them so much? Chances are, it wasn't because they brilliantly taught the curriculum or had excellent classroom management skills; most of us remember our amazing teachers because of how we felt and grew in their classroom.

While it is important for students to learn math and science, the life skills gained in the classroom are the most important thing a student can take with them. A good teacher understands this and is a good role model of qualities like respect, honesty, and accountability. A good teacher exemplifies these traits in and out of the classroom and helps their students to develop these same skills.

This being said, a good teacher will not forget about the curriculum. A good teacher will mix these life lessons into the academic lessons. For example, a math lesson about sharing toys would be a great way to teach young children number amounts while emphasizing the importance of sharing with peers. Students who are taught social skills and academic skills turn into well rounded individuals.

My 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Detwiler, was a great teacher. She always filled the room with energy in a way that made me want to learn. I grew to love school because of her. I still remember the day she taught me a new math strategy. It clicked in my head, and I felt on top of the world! I felt like the super heroes that she had decorated her room with. Her classroom was always an environment of encouragement and success.

What can you do in your future classroom to enhance the learning experience?
